Martin McDonagh, Werner Herzog, Cody Fern Films Round Out 2026 Toronto Fest Lineup

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has unveiled its 51st edition lineup, featuring 293 titles that will captivate audiences for two weeks in September. The additions showcase a diverse array of talent, including heavy hitters like Martin McDonagh and Werner Herzog alongside newcomers like Cody Fern.

McDonagh’s Wild Horse Nine, a dark comedy set against the backdrop of the 1973 Chilean coup, boasts an impressive cast, including John Malkovich and Sam Rockwell as CIA officers stationed on Easter Island. However, McDonagh’s previous works have often been marked by tonal inconsistency, which may leave audiences wondering whether Wild Horse Nine will be a laugh-out-loud comedy or a more somber commentary on geopolitics.

In contrast, Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard appears to be a departure from his usual documentary fare. Starring sisters Kate and Rooney Mara alongside Orlando Bloom and Domhnall Gleeson, the film promises to be a visually stunning exploration of human relationships and the natural world. As with many of Herzog’s works, it is likely to be a slow burn that rewards patient viewers.

TIFF has also committed to showcasing diverse voices and perspectives through documentaries like Neil Peart: No One’s Disciple, which explores the life and legacy of Rush drummer Neil Peart. This film serves as a fitting tribute to a music icon who left an indelible mark on rock ‘n’ roll.

Some titles in the lineup, however, seem more of a stretch. Małgorzata Szumowska’s The Idiot(s) has an offbeat premise and relatively unknown cast, which may not resonate with audiences as strongly. Guy Nattiv’s Liberation boasts a strong ensemble cast but its awards-bait drama status is unclear.

As TIFF prepares to kick off on September 10, questions remain about the festival’s cohesion and purpose in today’s streaming age. With so many films vying for attention, it is hard not to wonder whether the festival will feel overstuffed and disjointed this year. The Toronto International Film Festival’s 51st edition will undoubtedly be a reflection of our chaotic times – messy, disjointed, and ultimately fascinating.
