The World’s Languages Mustn’t Be Left Behind in the AI Boom
The rise of artificial intelligence has been hailed as a revolutionary force that will democratize access to information and empower marginalized communities worldwide. However, for those who don’t speak English or any of the dominant languages used by Big Tech, this revolution is largely inaccessible. Current AI, a nonprofit founded in 2025, aims to build an open, public alternative to private AI systems dominating today’s digital landscape.
At its core, Current AI’s mission is to create an infrastructure for language and knowledge that can be used by anyone, regardless of their native tongue or socioeconomic status. This goal has far-reaching implications. In India, where hundreds of languages and dialects are spoken, Current AI has developed a device called Suno Sutra, which enables users to access AI-powered information in 22 different languages without an internet connection.
The project is one example of the innovative work being done by Current AI, which has allocated $3.2 million in grants to projects across four organizations and launched an open-source chatbot at the AI for Good Summit in Geneva. However, it also reflects a broader problem: most major AI systems today are controlled by private companies that prioritize profits over people.
This approach has significant consequences. As Ayah Bdeir, Current AI’s CEO, noted during an interview with TechCrunch, “If AI is truly transformative, changing every aspect of everyone’s life, there must be a public alternative.” The World Wide Web was built on this principle, and it’s time for the world to have a similar foundation for artificial intelligence.
Language is not just a technical limitation; it’s also a refusal to acknowledge and respect cultural heritage when an AI system can’t speak a user’s native language. This is particularly true for Indigenous languages, which are being co-opted by Big Tech without consent or context.
Bdeir drew a sharp distinction between Current AI’s approach and the multilingual push by Big Tech companies. “Big tech builds multilingual models to expand their market,” she said, “regardless of consent or context.” This has led to the use of missionary Bible translations as training data for Indigenous languages, without consulting the communities themselves.
Current AI’s approach is built on several key principles: storing models and data locally, involving community experts in the development process, and writing consent protocols into the pipeline. These are not just technical solutions; they’re also a recognition that data ownership and control must be transferred to the communities themselves.
This requires a fundamental shift in how we think about AI development and deployment. As Bdeir noted, “Scale is not always the measure.” Current AI’s grantees have made significant progress with relatively modest budgets, but their work has also raised important questions about data ownership and control.
Current AI’s vision for an open-source AI stack is not just a technical solution; it’s also a cultural one. By building a system that supports the Japanese language and culture, as well as communities across the Global South, Current AI is creating a foundation for a more inclusive and equitable digital future.
However, this vision requires support from governments, companies, and philanthropies to scale up and make it a reality. As Bdeir noted, “This could look like an Indigenous elder in the Brazilian Amazon using a tool built in Kenya to be able to pass down ecological knowledge in their own language.”
As we move forward into the AI era, it’s time for us to ask some fundamental questions about the kind of future we want to build. Do we want an AI system controlled by private companies and prioritizing profits over people? Or do we want a public alternative built on principles of openness, inclusivity, and respect for cultural heritage?
The answer is clear: it’s time for a new paradigm in AI development and deployment – one that puts the needs of communities and individuals first.
